Polytechnic College of Utah was the name under consideration by the Board to be adopted. Two business management students, Kim Hansen and Doug Worthen headed the protest against the new name after declaring the suggested name was unsuit Elaine Cannon to Speak at Institute of Religion AS -: ' f - ' ,- " - , Elaine Cannon, President of the LDS Church, is the featured Institute of Religion. Some students and faculty members were opposed to the new name of Polytechnic Mrs. Elaine Cannon, an active and vibrant member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints will be the guest speaker this Friday, 12 at the Orem Institute. Mrs. Cannon has served in various organizations of the church and is probably most widely recognized for her leadership and services in the "Young Women's Mutual Improvement Association."The mother of six children and grandmother of twelve, Mrs. Cannon resides in Salt Lake with her husband D. James Cannon. She has served professionally as a reporter for SEVENTEEN Magazine and a writer and women's editor for the Deseret News. A graduate for the University of Utah, with a Bachelor of Science, and an enthusiastic interest in young women and their development. Miss. UTC Pageant Moved to Feb. 27 The Miss UTC Pageant Committee met last Monday (Jan. 22) to discuss preparations for the upcoming event. The committee changed the day of the pageant from Feb. 13 to Feb. 27 to give the girls a little longer to prepare, The entrance day was also moved to Feb. 1. All girls who wish to enter must have their application in to Rita Thomas in the Fashion Merchandising Dept. by or on that date. College of Utah because of the fear of being called Polocktechnical College and others were affraid of being tagged with the abbreviation of P.U. when written about. The date for choosing the new name for the college has not been set but the school's staff is open for suggestions and will take them into consideration as long as they meet the State Board of Regents requirements of including "Utah" in the title as well as being discriptive of the type of institution that the college represents. President Sorensen's Home Damaged By Fire Utah Technical College at Provo President Wilson Sorensen's home was severely damaged this past weekend by fire. Officials said the fire at 1100E. 27067 Arapahoe Lane in Provo caused approximately $75,000 in damages. Four fire deptartment vehicles and 14 men were involved with putting out the blaze. Firemen were at the home for nearly four and a half hours. The Sorensen family was not at home at the time of the fire, however, the family dog and cat were killed while their turtlesurvived. The winner of the contest will recieve a scholarship from the school along with prizes from local merchants. First and second attendants will also receive scholarships Miss UTC will represent the school at the Miss Utah Pageant and if selected Miss Utah) will represent the state at the Miss America Pageant in Atlantic City. The pageant will include a talent, evening gown, judges interview and bathing suit Two Chearleaders Dismissed Two UTC Cheerleaders been dropped from the squad. The decision to suspend the two for the rest of the school year was made after they failed to show up to cheer at a game while they were on probation. The two cheerleaders, Francy Hinckley and Jennifer England, were on probation for not going with the basketball team to an Arizona tournament during the Thanksgiving Holidays. They were given a warning not to miss anymore conference or home games or they would be dismissed. When they didn't show up for the C.E.U. (College of Eastern Utah at Price) game they were suspended indefinitely.The cheerleaders were committed to be at all of the home games and all of the ft r it . .1 W.m, The two cheerleaders who were suspended indefinitely from the squad are in the upper left corner.
