NetXNews, the student media program here at UVSC, debuted their first live sports broadcast of the men's basketball game on Jan. 8. It aired on Channel 3 in Orem and channel 41 in Provo. UVSC is the only all student produced live sports broadcast in Utah, and possibly in the nation. "This is a pretty exciting development we have going on here," said David Noriega, Executive News Manager of NetXNews and one of the key people behind the project. "We have been trying to give this some momentum for a while now, and the fact that is finally moving forward is fabulous," he said. A live sports broadcast is a daunting task. The weekly UVX News broadcast generally requires aboutis people, NetXNews pulled off the new project with a mere 25 person crew. "The idea of having a separate divi-son for sports had been in my head for quite some time," said Noriega. "It wasn't until we (the NetXNews staff) went to Atlanta last Octolx;r that we began discussing it as a real possibility." Grant Flygare, Student Media advisor and Philosophy professor, was likewise confident in the potential growth of a NetXNews sports division. "This is so exciting," he said. "It's amazing the amount of talent we have working on our side," he said. UVSC President Kerry Romesburg was ecstatic over the broadcast saying he was very impressed with the whole production. "I think it was great," said Romesburg. "It was one of those moments when you just smile for a long time," he said. Even with the approval of Romesburg, Noriega and fellow coworkers Jason Erikson, Clint Burgi, Taylor Sinquefield and Brady Cullimore had their work cut out for them. "We found out four days before the actual event that we were going to cover the game," said Erikson, who was the courtside reporter for last Saturday's game. "We had to start from scratch to somehow produce the show." Statistics had to be gathered and graphics had to be made. "We had to know the men's basketball team like the back of our hand," said Burgi, who co-anchored the game with Noriega. The next game to be broadcast will be February 19, when the Wolverines face off against Dixie. "Thankfully, we have more time to prepare for our next broadcast," said Noriega. 'Tilings ran so smoothly on our first outing, I am excited to see what we can do next time." NetXNews is planning to branch out in the coming months and is currently looking for students who would like to join the NetXNews staff. "Things are expanding," said Ifygare.
