Title | Simultaneous and Sequential Language Acquisition: A Comparison Study of American Sign Language-English Interpreters |
Author | Maxwell, Katie Lynn |
Abstract | Often, Coda/coda interpreters (child of a Deaf adult) are perceived to have more native-like command of ASL due to acquiring ASL and English naturally from birth, in comparison to A.T. interpreters, who have acquired ASL as adults through formal education. To investigate this phenomenon, the second language acquisition periods of Coda/coda and A.T. interpreters were compared in order to determine the impacts on their ability to obtain native-like prowess of ASL. Furthermore, some Deaf individuals have expressed a preference for a Coda/coda rather than an A.T. interpreter. Such a request may lead many to believe Codas/codas make better interpreters. Thus, the second phenomenon addressed in this study explored the perceived preference of Deaf individuals for a Coda/coda interpreter. At the conclusion of the study, it was found that the majority of Deaf participants did not have a preference for a Coda/coda interpreter; rather, they expressed a preference for an interpreter who illustrated superb ASL skills as well as a “Deaf heart” and a vested interest in the interpreting process. |
