Title | The Effect of Guided Math Groups on the Performance of Third-Grade Elementary Students in Mathematics |
Author | Burton, Rachael |
Abstract | The purpose of this study was to compare the mathematics achievement of third-grade students who were taught mathematics using guided math groups with students who were taught with whole-group direct instruction. The subjects of this quantitative study were students in two different third-grade classrooms. Before the teachers began teaching with different formats, baseline data was collected to ascertain similarity of the two groups. The data collected for this study were five common diagnostic checkpoints and five common end-of-chapter assessments. The mean scores from the two groups were compared and tested for statistically significant difference using t-tests. The results of this quantitative study provide evidence of the effectiveness of small-group instruction, specifically the use of small, guided math groups. In all the analyses but one, students receiving mathematics instruction through guided math groups achieved significantly higher scores on the diagnostic checkpoints and end-of-chapter assessments than students who were taught using whole group direct instruction, or in the case of the resource student comparison, the trend was a higher score for those in the class using guided math groups. |
