John Varah Long was born on 28 September 1826, the son of John Long and Hannah Marie Scholey, at Wickersburgh, Yorkshire, England. He was an Elder in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and he became a personal clerk for Brigham Young, the second president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
